Memorial Planned for Theatre Great Floyd Morgan

Floyd T. Morgan, a long time faculty member at Utah State University, died Aug. 4. As his obituary stated, his passing "brings down the final curtain on a lifelong career devoted to the Utah State University theater arts program."

Morgan joined the faculty in 1934 and was a faculty member of 47 years. He was hired as a speech instructor, became a professor of theater and served as department head until July 1, 1975. After his retirement he remained active, both with productions at Utah State, the Old Lyric Repertory Company and with the Valley Players, a community theater group he co-founded. Throughout his career he directed more than 125 plays, designed approximately 300 sets and performed at least 80 roles. He influenced the lives of thousands of theatre arts students at Utah State University and was affectionately referred to as "Prof." Throughout his career he was supported by his wife and creative partner, Edith Welch Morgan.

"Prof" was honored in 1981 when the theater in the Chase Fine Arts Center officially became the Floyd Thomas Morgan Theatre. This honor was followed by his induction to the Utah Theater Hall of Fame. In 1971 a scholarship was established in his name and is awarded annually.

A memorial service in Morgan's honor is hosted by Utah State's Department of Theatre Arts Friday, Aug. 29, at noon in the Morgan Theatre of the Chase Fine Arts Center. Faculty, students and members of the community are invited to attend.
