Mechanical Engineering Professor Co-Authors Review of 3D Printing Defects

Utah State University assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering Nadia Kouraytem is a co-author of a recently published review exploring defects and anomalies found in 3D printed metals.

The paper, entitled Defects and anomalies in powder bed fusion metal additive manufacturing,” was published earlier this month in Current Opinion in Solid State and Materials Science- Science Direct and synthesizes information from hundreds of publications to create one of the most comprehensive overviews of the defects that can occur in 3D-printed metals.

The publication provides an overview of what 3D printing is, identifies known defects that can occur, and then explores the sources of these defects and potential mitigation strategies. Having a substantial number of articles about 3D printing synthesized into one place creates a valuable tool for future research.

“It’s exciting to have this centralized source rather than having this information only come up in conferences and individual papers,” Kouraytem said.
