Lyric Repertory Company Announces Summer 2022 Lineup

Logan — The Lyric Repertory Company is producing six hot shows in three cool venues this summer.

The theater company was founded in 1967 by W. Vosco Call and has produced musicals, dramas, mysteries, farces, comedies and classics to the delight of local audience members and visitors from around the country. The Lyric Rep brings in professional actors and guest artists to work side by side with advanced theater students from USU’s Caine College of the Arts.

“The Lyric Rep is a Cache Valley summer staple,” said Richie Call, artistic director of the company. “This season has something everyone will love.”

Opening the 2022 season is “A Fox on the Fairway” by Ken Ludwig. Set amid the leafy greens of Quail Valley Country Club, the show unfolds on the day Quail Valley faces its oldest rival, nearby Crouching Squirrel Golf and Racquet Club, for the golf tournament of the decade. Battle lines are drawn when the two clubs, like Greece and Troy, assemble their bravest heroes and play on to the final, madcap putt on an 18th hole that is the stuff of legend. Buckle up for a riotous ride reminiscent of Marx Brothers classics June 17, 18, 24, 30, July 9, 16, 22 and 29 in the historic Caine Lyric Theatre. This show is rated PG-13.

Next up is Disney’s hit musical, “Freaky Friday.” When an overworked mother and her teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again. This musical, based on the celebrated novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films, is a heartfelt, comedic and unexpectedly emotional update on the American classic. By spending a day in each other’s shoes, Katherine and Ellie come to appreciate one another’s struggles, learn self-acceptance, and realize the immeasurable love and mutual respect that bond a mother and daughter. See the swap for yourself June 24, 25, July 1, 6, 15, 21 and 30 in the Morgan Theatre on the USU Campus. This show is rated PG.

Join us the first weekend of July for “Fences” by August Wilson. We follow former Negro baseball league star Troy Maxson, who now works as a garbage man in 1957 Pittsburgh. Troy was excluded from the major leagues during his prime, and his bitterness takes its toll on his relationships with his wife and his son, who now wants his own chance to play ball. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play, “Fences” is the sixth play in August Wilson’s 10-part “Pittsburgh Cycle.” The show runs July 1, 2, 7, 13, 23, 27, and 29 in USU’s Black Box Theatre. “Fences” is rated PG-13.

“Into the Breeches!” by George Brant is the fourth show of the Lyric Rep’s 2022 season. Set during World War II, the Oberon Play House’s director and leading men are off at war. Determined to press on, the director’s wife sets out to produce and all-female version of Shakespeare’s “Henry V,” assembling an increasingly unexpected team united in desire, if not actual theater experience. Together they deliver a delightful celebration of collaboration and persistence when the show must go on. See this moving comedy about the singular way art and community reveal our boldest selves in the darkest times on July 8, 9, 16, 20, 23, 27 and 30 at the Caine Lyric Theatre. This show is rated PG-13.

For the second year, Lyric Rep presents “interACT,” featuring playwright Herb Newsome’s “FreeMan in Paris,” a drama about a jazz trumpeter named Carter Freeman. After each performance of the show, Herb will speak with audience members about his experience as a playwright performing his own work. “interACT: FreeMan in Paris” plays July 14, 15, 20, 22 and 28 in USU’s Black Box Theatre. The show is rated PG-13.

“We’re excited to be doing ‘interACT’ for the second year in a row,” Call said. “It’s an opportunity for company members to showcase their own work. This year we’re lucky enough to have Herb Newsome here performing in ‘Fences’ and ‘A Fox on the Fairway’ and we’re thrilled that he gets to share ‘FreeMan in Paris’ with us while he’s here.”

The 4th Annual Vosco Call Spotlight Concert is a two-night, family-friendly concert to celebrate our patrons, feature the talents of our company, and support the Lyric Repertory Company Endowment Fund. Hosted by Richie Call and Jason Spelbring, the concert is in the Morgan Theatre on July 19 and 26. The Spotlight Concert is rated PG.
