Landscape Architect is Guest Speaker at Utah State University

Lisa Delplace, landscape architect and vice president of the Washington, D.C.-based firm Oehme van Sweden and Associates, is a visiting artist at Utah State University and will provide a lecture as part of the Marie Eccles Caine Visiting Artist program. The lecture is hosted by USU’s department of landscape architecture and environmental planning.

Delplace will speak Thursday, April 12, at 2:30 p.m. in the Taggart Student Center Auditorium. The lecture is free and all are invited.

Delplace will present an overview of her firm’s approach to landscape architecture, which has been described by design critics as the “New American Garden” style. The New American Garden is a metaphor for the American meadow that reflects the year-round beauty of the natural landscape. It frees plants from forced and artificial forms and allows them to seek a natural course as they weave a tapestry across the entire garden plane.

Delplace will also discuss recent projects, including the Chicago Botanical Garden.

The Visiting Artist Program organizes visits by nationally known artists, art historians, art critics and writers. Lectures, workshops, group discussions and possible exhibitions by the artists are provided and are free and open to the public.

Delplace’s presentation at USU follows an impressive series of landscape architects over the past few years, said USU professor John Nicholson of the landscape architecture and environmental planning department. Guests have included Bill Johnson, Peter Walker, George Hargreaves, Kathryn Gustafson and Martha Swartz.

The Visiting Artist Program is funded by a grant from the Marie Eccles Caine Foundation. Additional funding is provided by the Utah Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Utah Arts Council, with funding from the state of Utah, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
