Jazz Guitarist John Scofield Performs at USU

Utah State University hosts jazz guitarist John Scofield in concert Friday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Morgan Theatre of the Chase Fine Arts Center on the Logan campus.

“John Scofield is an icon in the world of improvised music,” said Corey Christiansen, director of the guitar program in the Caine College of the Arts. “He has firmly placed himself among the most important innovators in improvised music and has worked with the most important figures in jazz, including Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and countless others.”

Scofield began playing the guitar at age 11 and is currently an adjunct professor of music at New York University. He has worked with Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, Pet Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams and many others. Touring 200 days of the year with his own groups, Scofield works both as a performer and composer.

“He is a rare artist that has blended the musical vocabulary of jazz, blues and many forms of rock into his own music,” said Christiansen.

The performance will feature music from Scofield’s “Überjam” albums and other selections from his work. While at USU, Scofield will also teach a master class to students in the guitar studies program of the Department of Music.

Tickets for the John Scofield performance are $15 adults, $8 seniors, youth, USU faculty and staff and $5 for USU students with ID.
