Jason Brei to Become Next Chief of Police at USU

Utah State University has named Jason Brei chief of police within the Department of Public Safety after a nationwide search.

LOGAN, Utah — Utah State University has named Jason Brei as chief of police within the Department of Public Safety after a nationwide search. Brei will start at the Logan campus on July 1.

Brei brings 26 years of law enforcement experience to USU, with most of that time in a large university police department. He began his law enforcement career with the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona. In 2000, he joined the University of Arizona Police Department, where he is the assistant chief in the field operations division. While with UAPD, he has served in numerous positions, including as patrol officer, motor officer, corporal, lieutenant, commander, assistant chief and interim chief of police. He has more than 14 years in command-level positions and the last nine in executive leadership.

“Brei offers USU enormous leadership experience in law enforcement in a higher education environment, which can hold unique challenges in policing,” said Mike Kuehn, the executive director of Public Safety. “We’re looking forward to working with him to make our university community as secure as it can be.”

Throughout his career, Brei has instructed on various topics as a departmental and regional trainer. He has overseen UAPD’s firearms, community service officer and field training programs. Brei has also served on numerous University of Arizona leadership teams, panels and community functions, including the compliance advisory council and the threat assessment management team. Over his career, he has received several awards and recognitions of service, including Accredited Command Executive from the Arizona Association of Chiefs of Police in 2023.

“I am truly excited and humbled at being invited into the USU family,” Brei said. “I look forward to this incredible opportunity to engage with the community and serve alongside the exceptional individuals at the USU Police Department. I bring with me an innate desire to work collaboratively with community and department members to enhance public safety efforts in a spirit of forward action.”

Brei received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a Master of Administration in public management at Northern Arizona University. He also completed the FBI National Academy in 2010.

The chief of police serves as a primary resource and adviser to the university on matters related to law enforcement and is responsible for the comprehensive operations of the university's police department. The chief leads and directs all functions of university police on the Logan and Eastern campuses, with the goal of providing a peaceful, safe and welcoming environment for the university community.
