Interactive Music Experience for Children Taking Place at USU

By Hannah Castro |

LOGAN, UT – Utah State University invites the community to this month’s “Tuba and Euphonium Concert” as part of the Music Box Concert Series. The event will be at 11 a.m. Jan. 25 in Room 104 of the Chase Fine Arts Center.

This series from the Department of Music provides free concert experiences for families with young children. Each performance highlights one instrumental family and an outstanding USU student ensemble.

Since it began in 2016, the Music Box Concert Series has presented over 20 concerts. Ewa Wilczynski, music educator and founder of the series, designed the program to give preschoolers a hands-on opportunity to see and hear musical instruments up close.

“This free event caters to audience members from 1-100 years old,” Wilczynski said. “Members of the low brass studio will share their instruments in a short, interactive performance.”

Wilczyski’s colleague, Leslie Timmons, USU music faculty, encourages undergraduate students in the music program to take advantage of the series to prepare for performing for diverse audience ages.

With assistance from studio faculty member Sasha Kasman Laude, this series has flourished. Past concerts have featured a wide range of instruments such as piano, voice, strings, winds, percussion and music therapy.

After the performances, children are invited to interact with the musicians and take a closer look at the instruments. Accompanying adults are invited to bring a pillow or blanket for comfort because the majority of the event takes place on carpeted floors.

While this concert is free for children and accompanying adults, space is limited, and registration is required. To register and find more information, please visit the Caine College of the Arts Music page.
