In Defense of Self-Esteem Showcase

National Eating Disorder Awareness Week is Feb. 21-27, and Utah State University’s Student Health Center, Counseling and Psychological Services Center and the dietetics program have joined efforts to provide an opportunity for all USU students to showcase their creative talents while promoting a positive self-image.

The “In Defense of Self-Esteem Showcase” is an ongoing project, and USU students have until March 2 to submit works of art, musical pieces (on CD) or writing compositions that oppose the negative influence of beauty and fitness industry advertisements that are common is popular culture and the media. The purpose is to encourage others to think positive thoughts about themselves. Submissions can highlight the importance of inner beauty. Items should be submitted to the Student Health Center or the USU Honor’s Program office, Old Main, Room 015.

Entries that promote a positive self image and that are appropriate for general public viewing will be showcased at the Every “Body” Rocks Fair, March 8 in the International Lounge of the Taggart Student Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Project organizers posed these questions to consider when submitting entries:

  • Are you tired of being bombarded with artificially created images portraying unattainable beauty and impeccable physical physiques that appear on magazine covers and television, images that prompt feelings of inferiority that result in the purchase of products and procedures?
  • Are you overwhelmed by hearing or reading about unrealistic, hopeless strategies for becoming thinner, prettier or stronger?
  • Have you wished for an opportunity to stand up to the vanity of superficial messages and images?
