Health and Wellness Expo to Start Feb. 13 with Daily Events

By Marcus Jensen |

LOGAN, Utah — For more than a decade, Utah State University has hosted a Health and Wellness Expo to help students, faculty and staff learn about resources and services that USU has to offer and to help prioritize well-being. This year’s expo will be held Feb. 13-17, 2023, with events held each day of the week.

The exposition will help students, faculty and staff refocus, refresh and reconnect with their health and well-being. Studies have shown that focus on health and wellness are crucial to leading positive lives and can help with better performance in classes, at work and in life in general.

“The Health & Wellness Expo exposes participants to issues that encourage a healthy lifestyle,” said Ryan Barfuss, prevention specialist at the Student Health and Wellness Center. “Our theme this year is “Refresh, Refocus, Reconnect” and includes fitness, nutrition, relaxation, sustainability, general wellness and financial well-being. Employees, students, and the community are all invited to celebrate and learn about wellness opportunities and services.”

The Health and Wellness Expo is a collaboration between USU’s Student Health and Wellness Center, USU Campus Recreation, and the USU Employee Wellness Program. The expo will feature a health fair, workshops and fitness classes. The workshops will all include the ability to attend virtually.

“Hosting this expo allows us to bring the resources and services we have right to students and employees, rather than them trying to find and locate them out in the community,” said Employee Wellness Coordinator Alyssa Jensen. “Our goal is to promote awareness and educate on the importance of taking control of our health and well-being. We hope that everyone will learn something new and incorporate it into their lives.”

Further into the Dimensions of Wellness

  • 12-1 p.m. on Zoom
  • This interactive workshop offers a deeper dive into the Wellness Wheel, such as physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, environmental, social, and occupational well-being. When one or more dimensions are out of balance, there’s a chain reaction of too much energy/attention or not enough, and oftentimes we don’t address this when and where it matters. We will guide you to practical ways to analyze and evaluate each dimension of wellness, understand the nuances, and apply practical solutions for balance.

Thursday, Feb. 16:

Resilience

  • Have you ever noticed how some people seem to bounce back from negative life events? What enables them to adapt so well? Resilience is the quality that helps people get back up after life knocks them down. This presentation will discuss the factors of resilience, qualities of resilient people and skills to build resilience.

Yoga

  • 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the ARC Loft
  • Grab a friend or coworker and join us for yoga in the Loft. Enjoy the beautiful views of campus while flowing from pose to pose for a whole-body workout. Don't have a mat? No problem — we'll have mats you can use at the ARC.

Friday, Feb. 17:

Body Positivity

  • 12-1 p.m. in the TSC room 221 & on Zoom
  • The goal of the Body Positivity movement is to challenge how society views the body and help people build acceptance of their own bodies. Body image influences our mental health and well-being as poor body image can increase risk for depression and eating disorders. This presentation will address the unrealistic body standards in today's world, provide you with more information on what body positivity is and the reasoning behind it, and also give you tips on what you can do to improve your body image.
