Gregg Gensel Named Big West Coach of the Year

Aggie track and cross country head coach Gregg Gensel has been named the Big West Conference Coach of the Year. This year marks the 15th time he has received the honor overall and the fourth time as the cross country coach.

"This award should be viewed as one of the most important in Gensel’s profession because it is bestowed upon him by his conference colleagues," wrote Dennis Farrell, Commissioner of the Big West Conference, in a congratulatory letter.

Gensel's accomplishments were further magnified when Utah State won the Big West Conference individual cross country championships with 25 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Cal Poly, which scored 40 points. UC Santa Barbara was third with 95 points while Cal State Fullerton had 125 points and Idaho rounded out the top five with 128 points.

Utah State's men had previously won the team championship in 1992, 1993 and 1994. The Aggies have been runners-up six of the previous seven years, including each of the last two seasons.

The Utah State women's team took fourth place this season with 74 points as Idaho claimed the team title with 48 points, while UC Santa Barbara was second with 55 and UC Irvine edged USU with 72 points. Cal State Northridge was fifth with 168 points.
