Great Salt Lake Charrette Process Highlighted at Upcoming USU Research Landscapes

By Tabitha Smiel |

At the next USU Research Landscapes, David Anderson will share ways local leaders can work together to build stronger communities, as well as examples of how those tools are benefitting the Great Salt Lake.

The event is at noon Thursday, June 15, at O.C. Tanner headquarters in Salt Lake City.

A professional practice professor in the Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning program at Utah State, Anderson is part of a team that leads students through an annual charrette in various locations around Utah.

A charrette involves a short period of high-intensity work to study a focus area and generate ideas to solve problems or improve the location.

This past year, the LAEP charrette focused on the Great Salt Lake. During the project, teams worked on water use and sustainable infrastructure design, the eastern shoreline of the lake, the Jordan River, a possible Antelope Island research center, and Shoshone lands.

In his Research Landscapes presentation, Anderson will discuss ideas created through the charrette process to support the lake. He will also highlight past efforts in Kanab, Santaquin, and South Salt Lake to show how any community can benefit from the principles of a charrette.

Additionally, attendees will hear from Brian Steed, who serves as executive director of the Janet Quinney Lawson Institute for Land, Water and Air and was recently appointed Great Salt Lake commissioner.

USU President Noelle E. Cockett will also speak at the event. Her commitment to showcasing the excellence of Utah State University in land, water and air research — including making it a presidential priority — has been a driving force for the success of USU Research Landscapes.

The event begins at noon Thursday, June 15, with time for refreshments and networking with other attendees. Anderson will host a live question-and-answer session following the 30-minute main presentation.

Those interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP at researchlandscapes.usu.edu.

USU Research Landscapes is sponsored by O.C. Tanner. The series connects decision-makers across the Wasatch Front with the researchers exploring Utah’s land, water and air.
