Glacier Scientist Feb. 27 Water Initiative Speaker

Utah State University’s Water Initiative welcomes research scientist Suzanne Anderson to campus Wednesday, Feb. 27. Anderson, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado-Boulder, presents “Biogeochemistry of glacial landscape systems,” at 4 p.m. in the Biology-Natural Resources building, room 102. Her talk is free and open to all.

Anderson’s research focuses on studying the effect of glaciers on chemical weathering rates and the global carbon cycle, the relationship between glacier dynamics and subglacial hydrology, glacier outburst floods called jökulhlaups and catchment-scale hydrology and hydrochemistry. She specializes in collection of detailed field observations to constrain models of geomorphic systems.

Anderson is a member of UC-Boulder’s interdisciplinary Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research – known as INSTAAR – that conducts research, education and outreach related to earth systems science and global change in high-latitude and alpine environments.

The USU Water Initiative is an interdisciplinary collaboration of the university’s Utah Water Research Laboratory, the colleges of Agriculture, Engineering, Natural Resources, Science and Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences, and the Huntsman School of Business. Established in 2003, the initiative fosters collegial sharing of water-related research and ideas throughout campus and the community.

Upcoming Water Initiative seminar speakers include Chelsea Crenshaw, faculty member in USU’s Department of Biology, on March 5 and Larry Walkoviak, director - Upper Colorado Region, of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, March 19. Visit the USU Water Initiative Web site for a complete seminar schedule.

All seminars begin at 4 p.m. in BNR 102.

The Water Initiative’s annual Spring Runoff Conference [http://water.usu.edu/conference/] is March 31-April 1. The initiative also seeks proposals for 2008 Research and Teaching Initiation Grants [http://water.usu.edu/research/2008rfp.pdf]; proposal submissions are due March 17.
