Calling all rockhounds! Utah State University’s Department of Geosciences invites inquiring minds of all ages to campus for its annual Rock-n-Fossil Day 2023 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, in the Geology Building on the USU Quad. Admission is free.

“We’re excited to welcome the community to our long-running annual day of geoscience learning,” says Joel Pederson, department head. “This is a gathering we look forward to every year and, as always, our students, staff and faculty will offer a variety of engaging activities.”

The day’s activities include tours of the outdoor Centennial Rock Garden (weather permitting) and the USU Museum of Geology, as well as demonstrations and hands-on activities.

Guests will enjoy presentations on earthquakes and fossil collecting in Utah, as well as careers in the geosciences.

Guests are invited to bring their own “mystery” rocks, fossils and possible meteorites for identification by USU geologists.

“Fossil digging” and craft activities are provided for children.

The event takes place in the USU Geology Building, located at the northeast corner of the university Quad. Free parking is available in the surface lot south of Old Main. To access the lot, turn north from 400 North onto Champ Drive at the Huntsman School of Business, proceed west along the Quad toward Old Main and turn left into the parking lot. Parking is also available in the university parking terraces at 700 E. 600 North, 850 E. 700 North and 1070 E. 700 North, Logan.

Guests can also ride zero-fare Cache Valley Transit District buses, including the convenient Loop routes, to the USU campus.
