'Forever Strong' Rugby Coach Speaks at Jon M. Huntsman School of Business

A Salt Lake City rugby coach, known for leading his teams to 18 national championships and for inspiring the movie “Forever Strong,” has accepted an invitation to speak at Utah State University Jan. 28.

Larry Gelwix will be the first Dean’s Convocation speaker of the year at the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business. The convocation will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the Orson A. Christensen Auditorium (room 215) of the George S. Eccles Business Building. The speech is free and open to the public.

Gelwix is also the CEO of Columbus Travel and featured as the “Getaway Guru” on radio and television. Dean Douglas D. Anderson said that he wants the students to hear how Gelwix has achieved his success on and off the field.

“Larry works with each player individually, constantly emphasizing the importance of integrity, the value of total commitment and the power of teamwork,” Anderson said. “I want our business students to see how the application of such principles has led to amazing success in the hard-hitting world of rugby and in Larry’s vocational victories.”

Gelwix has been the coach of the Highland Rugby Club for 33 years and his teams have earned a win-loss record of 379 – 9. The USA Rugby organization has held national championships for the last 24 years and Highland won the championship 18 times, placed second five times and placed third once.

Gelwix and Mark Faldmo founded Columbus Travel in 2001, and it is a company that has always experienced double-digit growth and been profitable since its creation, Gelwix said.

Gelwix’s syndicated live radio show is heard every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on several stations, including 610 KVNU in Logan and on 570 KNRS in Salt Lake City. He is also featured every Wednesday as the “Getaway Guru” on KUTV 2 News This Morning.

The movie Forever Strong was released in fall 2008. It tells a story of a rebellious and angry rugby player who finds it difficult to adapt to the discipline and philosophy of the Highland Rugby Club. Gelwix said the movie combines a number of true events from his time as a coach and portrays them into a single season.

Dean’s Convocations are held monthly during the fall and spring semesters at the Huntsman School of Business at USU.
