Flute-Oboe Duo Appears At Utah State University

The Department of Music at Utah State University sponsors a concert by guest artists Heidi Pintner and Michele Fiala, a flute-oboe duo that performs Friday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Performance Hall on campus.

Tickets are available at the door. General admission is $5, and USU students with current ID are admitted free.

Pintner and Fiala have performed together for five years and are active in commissioning new works for their instrumental combination.

“The evening’s program includes ‘Cats in the Kitchen,’ a work scarcely a month old by Utah composer Phillip Kent Bimstein,” said music department faculty member Nicholas Morrison. “Phillip is a long-time friend of USU and the music department. He often refers to his music as ‘alternative classical.’ A better label might be ‘just plain fun.’ We’re all in for a treat as we hear ‘Cats in the Kitchen.’ Of course, dog lovers may prefer the coyotes from ‘Half Moon at Checkerboard Mesa.’”

The two compositions by Bimstein provide the conclusion for the program — Cats in the Kitchen with movements “Eggs and Toast,” “O Sole Meow” and “Where’s Your Mouse, McGee?,” and Half Moon at Checkerboard Mesa, a fantasy for flute, oboe and frogs.

Other program selections include Sonata in G by G.P. Telemann, Sonatine (in Canon Style) by Paul Hindemith, Arias for Flute and Oboe by W.A. Mozart and Ozymandias by Michael Kallstron.

Oboist Fiala is assistant professor of double reeds at Western Kentucky University. She has concertized throughout the United States, Italy and Canada, and has performed with the Louisville Orchestra, Phoenix Symphony, Banff Summer Music Festival and the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute. She has also performed with Lee Ann Rimes and Roberta Flack.

Fiala earned her doctorate and master’s degree from Arizona State University and her bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky.

Pintner is assistant professor of flute and music theory at Western Kentucky University and plays in the Bowling Green Chamber Orchestra. She previously taught at California State University, Chico, and performed with the North State Symphony, Chico Early Music Ensemble and Sacramento Early Music Consort. She is an active soloist, chamber player, clinician and adjudicator throughout the United States and Mexico.

Pintner holds degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Florida State University, where she earned her master’s and doctorate.
