First Annual Turkey Trot 5K Launches on Campus Nov. 5, Also Open Virtually

By Marcus Jensen |

Utah State University Campus Recreation will host its first annual Turkey Trot 5K fun run and walk on Friday, Nov. 5. The event will take place in several waves, with opportunities for competitive races, recreational runs and walks and virtual opportunities for participants off campus. Registration is now open and closes Friday, Oct. 22.

The event is open to all USU students, faculty, staff and all members of the local community. Registration is free for USU students thanks to the support from the Utah State University Student Association, with a registration fee of $15 for other participants. Registrants will receive a Turkey Trot hat as part of their registration fee.

“Campus Recreation is always looking to provide more activities to help promote health and wellness in our community,” said Amanda Bray, assistant director of healthy lifestyle programs and community engagement. “Therefore, starting an annual race tradition will help contribute to that mission by creating not only a fun and social atmosphere, but also one that will help focus on building your physical health and wellbeing.”

The first wave will begin at 5 p.m., with a second wave to begin at 5:15 p.m. These first two waves will be for racers who want a more competitive atmosphere. A third wave will begin at 5:30 p.m. and is reserved for those that would like to have a more recreational run or walk. All races on USU’s campus will begin and end on the Aggie Legacy Fields. The male and female with the best race time will receive a turkey.

Racers are also encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to the race, which will be donated to charity. Priority items that are desired include easy-to-make meals for families. Anyone who brings a nonperishable food item will receive a free water bottle. The food will be donated to The Family Place.

“This food will mainly be directed to the youth that are a part of The Family Place program,” Bray said. “After speaking with their representative, they are looking for easy-to-cook meals like macaroni and cheese, Raman noodles/bowls, canned fruit, soup, SpaghettiOs’s, etc.”

Those who are unable to be on USU’s campus on Nov. 5 can still participate in the event, whether it be on other USU statewide campuses or in their own neighborhoods. Racers who would like to have their times considered for the top three finishers must submit their times to Amanda Bray (amanda.bray@usu.edu) no later than Thursday, Nov. 4, at noon.

“We understand that not everyone will be able to make it to the event whether due to schedule or where they live,” Bray said. “We wanted to open up an event to allow access to our statewide campuses to participate in as well. Our surrounding community is just as much a part of the university, as they constantly support our programs by attending events provided by Utah State.”

Registration for the race is now open and will close on Friday, Oct. 22. To register, visit www.usu.edu/campusrec/special-events/run-walk-events.
