Eat Well, Be Well: USU Wellness Center Offers Nutritional Advice

Do you want to eat healthier but hate to cook? Are you overwhelmed with the overflow of choices on supermarket shelves and do you experience sticker shock at the checkout counter? Do local take-out restaurants know you by name?

If you answered any of these questions with a “yes,” Utah State University’s nutritional pros have solutions for you.

Registered dietitian MarLee Harris of USU’s Student Wellness Center is coordinating shopping tours, classes and nutritional counseling to help Aggie students, faculty and staff get on a healthy eating track.

USU students are invited to participate in 30-minute Grocery Shopping 101 supermarket tours. “The tours are quick, easy and fun,” says Harris. “You’ll be navigating the aisles like a pro in no time.”

Local business Lee’s Marketplace is hosting students during five separate tours this fall, she says, and offering prizes for participants. Tours will be offered Thursday, Oct. 11, Monday, Oct. 29, Wednesday, Nov. 7, Saturday, Nov. 17, and Tuesday, Nov. 27. All tours start at 2 p.m. and end by 2:30 p.m.

Advance registration is required. Students who wish to participate should call 435-797-1660 to reserve a spot. Participants meet at the Lee’s Marketplace service desk, 555 E. 1400 North in Logan.

Shopping tours at Lee’s Marketplace are also offered for USU employees on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Advance registration is required. To register, call 435-797-1660. Participants should meet at the store’s service desk.

For students, faculty and staff who wish to learn cooking skills or brush up with new ideas, Student Wellness and Lee’s Marketplace offer free, Wednesday evening Kitchen Kan-Do Cooking Classes. Two upcoming series, The Essentials and World Cuisine Made Healthy, are offered.

The Essentials series includes The Power of Protein, Oct. 10; Varied Veggies, Oct. 17 and Fab Food in 15, Oct. 24. The World Cuisine Made Healthy series includes Italian, Nov. 7; Indian, Nov. 14 and Mexican, Nov. 28.

Classes are held at 5 p.m. at the Aggie Village Office located at 1200 E. 1150 North in Logan.

Participants can register for one class or an entire series. To register, call 435-797-1660.

Finally, students can access free nutritional counseling at the Student Wellness Center and, for a limited time, USU employees can also receive counseling for a nominal fee.

Nutritional counseling on such issues as weight loss, eating disorders, blood glucose control, heart healthy nutrition and nutrition during pregnancy and lactation, is available to USU employees on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Student Wellness Center, 850 E. 1200 North (just north of Romney Stadium.) The center is accessible from the main campus via the Aggie Shuttle Stadium Express.

Cost for USU employees for nutritional counseling is $15 for the first appointment and $10 for each follow-up appointment.

To schedule a nutritional counseling appointment, call 435-797-1660.
