Earning a College Degree — What Should that Mean?

The Association of American Colleges and Universities brands itself as “a voice and a force for liberal education in the 21 century,” and in its recent online publication provided insights presented by Utah State University professors Norm Jones, committee chair of general education at USU, history professor Daniel McInerney and English professor Brian McCuskey.

In the publication’s “Toolkit Resources: Campus Models & Case Studies,” the USU team is featured in “Aligning General Education and the Major at Utah State University” that opens by asking “What does it mean to have a college degree?” and further, how does that degree demonstrate what a graduate knows and is able to do?

The article spotlights what Utah State University did to reconceptualize general education and how general education connects with major programs. The piece offers a model for other universities to consider.

"USU is recognized nationally and internationally for its work in creating coherent undergraduate curriculum, and is being used as an example of good practice by many national organizations, including the AAC&U, the National Institute for Outcomes Learning Assessment, and the Lumina Foundation,” Jones said.
