Director of Athletic Bands Lane Weaver Earns Special Commendation From USU Board of Trustees

LOGAN — Utah State University is recognizing Director of Athletic Bands Lane Weaver’s excellence in leadership, teaching and service with a special commendation from the USU Board of Trustees.

A Utah State University alumnus and professional practice assistant professor, Weaver joined the Caine College of the Arts faculty as director of athletic bands and assistant director of bands in 2016. Prior to his appointment at USU, he served as director of athletic bands at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. During his tenure the FHSU Athletic Bands earned a reputation among the most active and exceptional athletic band programs in all of Division II athletics.

Originally from southeast Idaho, Weaver holds a Bachelor of Music in music education from USU, a Master of Music in trombone performance from the University of Notre Dame, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in wind conducting from the University of Kentucky. He is an active arranger of athletic band and brass choir music, with his work performed by several universities throughout the U.S. Weaver maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor and adjudicator and enjoys visiting high school and junior high band programs. As well as directing the Aggie Marching Band, Weaver also directs the Basketball Pep Band and Low Brass Choir and assists with the Symphonic Band and Cache Wind Symphony.

As thousands of community members, staff and students witness at every home football game, the Aggie Marching Band is a positive representative and constant source of school spirit for the CCA and university. In all kinds of weather and no matter the score, these 180 students and their director are always 100% behind the team. The group reflects the values that we all aspire to as part of the Aggie Family, providing a home base and connection to campus for the students in the band, along with opportunities for them to serve as musical ambassadors for USU.

Since joining the USU faculty, Weaver has doubled the size of the Aggie Marching Band and expanded the reach of the athletic program to include men’s and women’s basketball games.

“Dr. Weaver and the students of the Aggie Marching Band are truly a bright spot for USU,” USU President Noelle Cockett said. “They are broadening the tradition of excellence that has been a hallmark of the band program since the days of Dr. Max Dalby more than six decades ago.”

While Weaver will be the first to point out that he works as part of a larger team in the CCA Music Department, including Marching Band Assistant Director Marilyn Cole and Director of Bands Thomas P. Rohrer, and that the students in the band take on significant leadership responsibilities on and off the field, the tone and example he personally sets for the athletic band program has made a huge difference in the band’s ability to serve the institution.
