Conversation with Artist Jean Lowe and Reception at NEHMA

California-based artist Jean Lowe will visit Utah State University to discuss her work in the exhibition Your Place in the Multiverse: Jean Lowe currently on display at USU’s Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art (NEHMA).

The talk will take place on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 5 p.m. in the Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall and is free and open to all. Capacity in the hall will be limited to 125 seats (30% capacity) for safety, and face masks are strongly encouraged. A reception and book signing will follow at NEHMA with light hors d’oeuvres and beverages.

Lowe is an American pop/conceptual multimedia artist who carefully and humorously unpacks the ironies and challenges of our 21st-century culture. Her work revolves around the intersection of popular culture, environmentalism, commerce, politics and art history. Your Place in the Multiverse: Jean Lowe is a survey of her work drawn from the past seventeen years featuring many of her most important installations.

Moderating the conversation with Lowe will be Marissa Vigneault, assistant professor of art history at USU, and Katie Lee-Koven, executive director and chief curator at NEHMA. After their remarks, the conversation will open to questions from the audience.

“This is a special opportunity to hear Jean Lowe talk about her process and the themes and topics that inspire her work,” said Lee-Koven. “Lowe’s art is so thought-provoking as well as humorous, and I look forward to our discussion together. We are proud to showcase this important exhibition of Lowe’s work and share it with our visitors.”

A full-color, 96-page, hardbound exhibition catalog for Your Place in the Multiverse: Jean Lowe will be available for purchase from the NEHMA Museum Store, and Lowe will be signing books during the reception. Alongside numerous photographs of the exhibition, the catalog features three essays exploring Lowe’s work—the first two by Lee-Koven and Vigneault, and the third by renowned art scholar and professor John C. Welchman.

Your Place in the Multiverse: Jean Lowe will be on view through December 19.

Visiting the museum is free of charge. We are open Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Free visitor parking is offered in the lot behind the Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall. For this Saturday’s event, there will also be free parking in the new four-level Gateway Terrace parking facility.

For public transportation, ride the Cache Valley Transit routes 1, 4 or the Green or Blue Loop and get off at the Fine Arts stop.
