Communitas Connects Students, Artists, Community

The Caine College of the Arts Communitas yearlong lecture series invokes the fundamental spirit of community, with a wide range of artists, designers and scholars whose work and lives promote the values of equality, diversity and togetherness.

“The series features artists who are people of color, LGBTQI&A, and/or women who are underrepresented in their respective artistic discipline,” said Professor of Art History Laura Gelfand. “Seeing these successful artists, designers, and scholars talk about their work, their experiences, and their lives is incredibly inspiring and informative for our students.”

Department faculty members nominate and select artists who would be most beneficial and relevant to the students.

“While they are here, many visiting artists also work with students who are studying in their specific fields, and this gives our students the chance for even more engagement with these incredible visitors,” Gelfand said.

Communitas lectures are free, open to the public, and presented by the Caine College of the Art’s Department of Art + Design. Check out the listing below for this semester’s lectures.

Kate Bingaman-Burt

Feb. 15, 5-6 p.m.

Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall.

Visiting artist Kate Bingaman-Burt, known all around the world for her unique art style, mostly draws, letters, documents, and collects. She is a full-time Professor of Graphic Design at Portland State University and makes illustrations for all sorts of clients all around the world.

Brooks Oliver

Feb. 29, 5-6 p.m.

Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall.

Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator of Ceramics at the University of North Texas, Brooks Oliver, is a studio artist based out of Denton, Texas.

Nicholas Galanin

March 21, 5-6 p.m.

Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall.

Nicholas Galanin is a Tlingit and Unangax^ multi-disciplinary artist and musician from Alaska. His work often explores a dialogue of change and identity between Native and non-Native communities.

Keltie Ferris

April 4, 5-6 p.m.

Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall.

Having earned a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and an MFA from the Yale School of Art, Keltie Ferris is an abstract painter living in Brooklyn.

Evangeline Griego

April 11, 5-6 p.m.

Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall.

Evangeline Griego is a veteran independent filmmaker, director, and media activist who made her feature-length documentary directorial debut with the film God Willing.
