Caine College of the Arts Faculty Member Awarded Travel Grant to Teach Masterclasses

By Annabel Higbee |

LOGAN, Utah — Assistant Professor of Flute Jeiran Hasan recently received a travel grant, allowing her to perform recitals and teach masterclasses in Ohio and West Virginia.

Over the course of seven days, Hasan visited seven institutions and taught six masterclasses. Notably, Hasan performed at two of the most prestigious music conservatories in the nation, Oberlin Conservatory and Cleveland Institute of Music. She also visited Ohio State University, West Virginia University, Ohio University, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory and Miami University.

"Being able to represent myself and Utah State University at the highest professional level within my field was a big privilege,” Hasan said, “and I am so thankful to my flute colleagues for hosting me and allowing me to share my music and teaching with their students.”

Hasan’s recital program showcased a diverse selection of music by contemporary female composers from Azerbaijan, Iran and the United States. Coming from an Islamic culture, Hasan says she enjoys being able to represent underrepresented voices in the music industry and understands the importance of highlighting female composers and performers.

Since beginning her journey teaching at Utah State University in the fall of 2022, Hasan has received several grants to teach and travel. She received a research fellowship to cover travel for research sponsored by the Center for Intersectional Gender Studies and Research.

Hasan believes in encouraging her students to explore a wide range of opportunities and activities that can complement their music-making and performance skills. She emphasizes that the music industry offers diverse career paths, and maintaining an open mind is key to achieving future success.

“I really enjoy meeting new flutists, both professionals and students, hearing them play, playing chamber music with them, and learning new repertoire from them,” Hasan said. “My favorite thing about teaching is learning more, whether it’s new teaching styles, repertoire and composers, and foundational background of others which helps me to also continue developing my network.”
