Art on a Budget

Whether displayed under museum glass or hanging on the wall of dorm room 103, art has a profound impact — one being seen all over Utah State University’s campus.

Collected by old and new, “Starting Small” showcases USU student collections curated by current students. The exhibit, opening Nov. 7 in the Tippetts Exhibit Hall located in the Chase Fine Arts Center on USU’s campus, illustrates the diversity of art and its collection through the eyes of independent students.

“This is a grassroots exhibition displaying what Utah State students are collecting on their own,” said Chris Terry, associate dean of the Caine College of the Arts. “It’s an interesting showcase of professional art collected independently.”

Four Utah State students, Trissta Lyman, Megan Mitchell, Brady Mathews and Megan Evans, are curating the exhibit and gathering artwork from other students’ private collections.

“The best part is these aren’t your stereotypical art collections,” said Terry. “They are collected by students who don’t have a lot of money or space so there is a rich diversity among the collections, which is exciting to display.”

The exhibit has an interesting approach since the curators were able to go inside USU students’ homes to view and discuss their collections with them to prepare for it, said Terry.

“We’re working hard to highlight student collectors among us and show that we, as students, can begin our own collections,” said Trissta Lyman, a graduate student in interior design at Utah State. “As college students, we may not be wealthy, but we can always start small and collect as we go along.”

The exhibit will include works of all mediums from paintings to photography to mixed media and 3D objects created by new and upcoming artists as well as some from well-known artists.

“The students I’ve worked with have really motivated me to make collecting a priority,” said Brady Mathews, a senior majoring in interior design at USU. “The story behind each student’s collection is what makes this exhibit unique.”

Starting Small” is open to the public Nov. 7-Dec. 1, Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Tippetts Exhibit Hall.

An opening reception is Nov. 11 from 5-7 p.m. in the Tippetts Exhibit Hall and all are invited.
