Aggie Named President of International Association for Statistical Computing

Utah State University statistician Juergen Symanzik has been elected president of the International Association for Statistical Computing.
Symanzik served two years as President-Elect and assumed the presidency this fall for the global organization, which is one of seven related associations affiliated with the 4,000-member, Dutch-based International Statistical Institute. The IASC publishes the professional journal, Computational Statistics & Data Analysis, along with the recently launched Journal of Data Science, Statistics and Visualisation.
Symanzik’s presidential term lasts until July 2021 and he will continue to serve in the office of Past President until July 2023.
“It’s an honor to serve an organization that is instrumental in guiding the development of accurate statistical methods for scientists and professionals throughout the world,” says Symanzik, professor in USU’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics. “I look forward to working with top minds toward advancing the field of statistics and sharing information about opportunities in this field for USU students and faculty.”
As president, Symanzik, who was elected an American Statistical Association Fellow in 2015, will oversee an active schedule of conferences, meetings and student competitions around the world for the organization, which is divided into Asian, European and Latin American regional sections.
“Our objectives include promoting sound theory, methods and practice of statistical computing among researchers and professionals in statistics, computer science and related areas at universities, governmental institutions and in the private sector,” Symanzik says. “In addition, we’re focused on recruiting and supporting the next generation of statisticians through support of students.”
USU Department of Mathematics and Statistics head Jim Powell says having an Aggie at the helm of a distinguished international organization provides an exciting portal for Utah State students and faculty.
“We congratulate Juergen on this honor and look forward to insights he can bring to us from this global vantage point,” Powell says. “His position brings a broad window to our corner of the world.”
