6th Annual Paper & Clay

Paper & Clay is a national juried exhibition open to all BFA & MFA printmaking and ceramic students across the country. This year’s exhibition showcases 54 exceptional contemporary student works from 20 various academic institutions. This year’s juror is printmaking artist and University of Minneapolis professor Jenny Schmid.

The reception for the exhibit is on Thursday, Feb 16, from 5 – 7 PM.

The Tenuous Renaissance?in Playscape Design

In recent?years, the U.S. has undergone a renaissance in playscape design. Those designing and commissioning playgrounds are increasingly moving away from static pole and platform structures that provide?little play value and even less challenge. While safety is still one of the major drivers of playground?design, there?is an increasing understanding that not all risks can or should be limited--and some are beneficial. The adventure playground--where children build their own environments with hammers and saws--has made a bit of a comeback, and loose parts are being embraced on a wider scale. Innovative climbing features let children climb higher, farther, and in more social?ways--while limiting falls from high places. And designers are increasingly bringing nature into playscapes--which has positive?impacts on children's?health and well-being.?

In this presentation, Daniel Jost will discuss the playscape renaissance taking place, some of the playscapes he documented as a writer at Landscape Architecture Magazine, and his own efforts to support thoughtful playscapes and outdoor learning environments.

Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic is a parody. This comedy follows the escapades of a group of student wizards who have not been the hero of their own story.

Playwright Matt Cox describes these characters as "Funny, intelligent, silly, heartwarming, a little worn and slightly ignored."

It's time for the "losers" of this magic school to rise!

Science Unwrapped: Computing with Honeybees

Inquiring minds of all ages are invited to Science Unwrapped, the public outreach program of USU's College of Science. Admission is free. Our Feb. 10 speaker is USU computer scientist Vladimir Kulyukin, who presents "Music, Traffic, Solar Harvests: Computing with Honeybees" at 7 pm in the Emert Auditorium (ESLC 130) of the Eccles Science Learning Center on the USU Logan campus. Dr. Kulyukin will speak for about half an hour and then invite questions from the audience. Afterwards, enjoy refreshments and hands-on STEM learning activities provided by student and community groups in the ESLC atrium. Feb. 10, 2023 Talk Description: According to USU computer scientist Vladimir Kulyukin, computation can unlock mysteries of honeybee behavior, how the bees' environment affects how they live, along with the "music" of bees' buzzing.
