SCENIUS is a group exhibition of faculty and graduate student alumni of Utah State University (USU). Coined by musician and record producer Brian Eno, the term scenius refers to the extraordinary creativity and ingenuity that can emerge from communities, places, or "scenes". For the past twenty-five years, faculty members John Neely and Dan Murphy have cultivated such an environment within USU's graduate ceramics program. This exhibition highlights this pivotal period in the program's history and explores the unique qualities that define USU's scenius.

Utah Court of Appeals Special Oral Argument Session

The Utah Court of Appeals will be holding a special session inside the Geary Theater. There will be two cases heard with three judges attending. A Q&A session with the judges will follow the last case.
The event is being hosted by the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice and the Institute of Government and Politics.

Communitas Lecture Series: Tetsuo Kusama
Arts/Entertainment
After graduating from Musashino Art University, Tetsuo Kusama went to work for Kawashima Textile in Kyoto, where he learned about the new weaving techniques that were emerging in Europe and the United States at the time. He studied at the graduate school of Cranbrook Academy of Art, and from the 1970s while traveling back and forth between Japan and the U.S., exhibited his works at the Lausanne Tapestry Biennale and other exhibitions, and actively pursued the possibility of public art by installing work in public spaces such as halls and hospitals. In recent years, he has received international acclaim, including consecutive awards at the International Fiber Art Biennale in China. Kusama came to Okayama Prefecture in 1993 with the opening of Okayama Prefectural University, where he worked as a supervisor until his retirement in 2011 to train future generations, and now continues his creative activities at his studio in Akaiwa, Okayama.

Master of Public Health (MPH) in Public Health Nutrition Virtual Open House

The College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences offers a 100% online Master of Public Health (MPH) in Public Health Nutrition. The program prepares students for leadership and administrative positions in public health and can also help students get accepted into medical or dental school and other doctorate programs. The program is holding a Virtual Open House that will include a program overview and Q&A session on March 20, 2025, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. A recording will be available afterward for individuals who register but are not able to attend live. The Transforming Communities Institute, in collaboration with the Department of Social Work, is hosting the 3rd annual USU Social Work Mini Conference on Friday, March 21 from 12-4 PM. This fully virtual, half-day conference offers participants the opportunity to earn up to 4 hours of continuing education, including one hour of ethics and one hour of suicide prevention. Science Unwrapped, the public STEM outreach program of USU's College of Science, invites inquiring of minds of all ages to participate in science learning fun. Admission is free. Each event begins with a brief science talk following by hands-on learning activities and refreshments. Our Spring 2025 theme is "Celebrate Undergrad Research" in recognition of USU's 2025 "Year of Undergraduate Research." March 21 Speakers: Biological engineer Elizabeth Vargis pursues study of Raman spectroscopy, muscular atrophy and subretinal tissue research. Vargis and undergraduate scholar Sophia Hessami are developing in vitro models of retinal pigment epithelial cells to better understand disease, test new treatments and build computer simulations to understand the role of growth factors. In the process, Hessami is developing skills and experience she plans to apply to graduate study in biological engineering.

Home Mushroom Cultivation
Workshop/Training | Home, Family, and Food
Please join us for this workshop where we’ll learn about fungal biology and ecology, mushroom cultivation, culinary uses of mushrooms, and further ideas for working with fungi. You will leave with a solid understanding of how fungi grow and interact with their environment, how to cultivate mushrooms at home, and how to safely enjoy mushrooms as food. You will also leave with a list of resources for further learning, and new ideas for working with fungi beyond this class. Please note, while we will cover some regional fungi and physical features of mushrooms, this is not a mushroom identification class.
Volunteer with Athletics United Running Sessions

Volunteer with Athletics United running sessions at the Fieldhouse. Currently, the majority of club participants are 5-14 years-old and hail primarily from the United States, Eritrea, and Somalia; however, the club has seen children from Burma, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Sierra Leone. On any given week, 15-25 kids show up for fun and instruction. Sign up as a volunteer through the link provided. No background check is necessary unless volunteers will be driving Athletics United participants.

Spring Runoff Conference

The USU Spring Runoff Conference is an annual gathering that provides a forum for interdisciplinary sharing of ideas on water-related issues in Utah and the Intermountain Region extending to all aspects of water science, ecology, policy, engineering, and management. We invite students, faculty, consulting and government agency professionals as well as environmental and citizen organizations to participate.
USU and the Northern Utah Water Users are again combining for the 2025 conference, which will be held March 25-26, 2025. This two-day conference will feature invited speakers, student presentations, and multiple opportunities to connect.
With this year’s conference theme, Advancing Solutions for Policy, Innovation, and Sustainability, we join the Utah Water Research Laboratory (UWRL) in celebrating its 60th anniversary while looking to the future of research and water management in an era of unprecedented challenges. By establishing the UWRL 60 years ago, the state of Utah recognized the important contribution of research for managing our scarce water resources. With growth and environmental change, this research remains critical and the UWRL looks forward to serving the state.
On March 25, the event will be held at the Cache County Event Center. On March 26, it will be held on campus at the Eccles Conference Center.

Master of Public Health (MPH) in Veterinary Public Health Virtual Open House

The College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences offers a 100% online Master of Public Health (MPH) in Veterinary Public Health. The program is holding a Virtual Open House that will include a program overview and Q&A session on March 27, 2025, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Mountain Time. The program provides interdisciplinary training that integrates veterinary sciences with core public health principles. Develop essential skills to monitor and control public health threats by understanding disease transmission among humans, animals, and the environment and receive specialized training in the emerging public health discipline of One Health. USU Ceramics Alumni Exhibition

SCENIUS is a group exhibition of faculty and graduate student alumni of Utah State University (USU). Coined by musician and record producer Brian Eno, the term scenius refers to the extraordinary creativity and ingenuity that can emerge from communities, places, or "scenes". For the past twenty-five years, faculty members John Neely and Dan Murphy have cultivated such an environment within USU's graduate ceramics program. This exhibition highlights this pivotal period in the program's history and explores the unique qualities that define USU's scenius.
This exhibition runs March 17–31 in the Tippetts & Eccles Galleries with a reception March 17 from 5–7 p.m. The galleries are open M–F from 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

Crossing Borders: 21st Century Chamber Music from Diverse Voices

The Utah State University Chamber Music Program, in collaboration with the Caine College of the Arts and the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music, will present Crossing Borders III: 21st Century Chamber Music from Diverse Voices. This concert features USU string and piano students performing works by living composers from a variety of cultural and musical backgrounds.
The program includes three world premieres:

Sessions for String Quartet by USU percussion faculty member Jason Nicholson
In the Trees for Piano Trio by Ben Shirley
Other composers featured in the program include Nicolás Lell Benavides, Kenji Bunch, Gabriela Lena Frank, and Iman Habibi.
This performance marks the third installment of the Crossing Borders initiative, showcasing the impressive dedication and skill of USU students. They have worked directly with their composer mentors this semester, as well as members of the Fry Street Quartet, Dr. Sasha Kasman Laude, and Dr. Cahill Smith.

Tanner Talk: "Aid in Conflict: Can Aid Deliver During Humanitarian Crises?"

Michael Findley is the Erwin Centennial Professor of Government at UT Austin. Findley conducts interdisciplinary research on political violence, international development, illicit finance, ethics, and methodology. Findley publishes in leading outlets and his policy work includes collaborations with the World Bank, USAID, African Development Bank, UN FACTI, UNICEF, UN Peacebuilding Fund, UN Development Program, International Aid Transparency Initiative, and many aid recipient country governments. Prof. Findley will discuss his experimental work from conducting experiments in Afghanistan after the Taliban returned to power.

Concerts are part of the band’s large ensemble curriculum. As capstone events, they typically occur twice per semester. Participation in these events is a significant component of students’ grades, and the concerts are the culmination of several weeks of classroom rehearsals. All concerts are associated with one or more of the following band ensembles: MUSC 4700 Wind Orchestra, MUSC 3795 Wind Symphony, MUSC 3790 Symphonic Band, and MUSC 3785 Marching Band.
Opera Double-bill: "L’Enfant et les sortilèges & Rusalka" (Act 3)

USU Opera Theatre will close their 2024-2025 season with a fun multi-part program of opera and musical theatre favorites highlighting all our students with two full programs produced over three nights April 10-12, at 7:30 in the Morgan Theatre.
On April 10 & 12 we will present what we could best be described as an “Opera Creature Feature double-bill”. On this program we will perform all of Ravel’s comedic one-act opera L’Enfant et les sortilèges followed by the final act of Dvorák's tragic retelling of the classic Little Mermaid story in his opera Rusalka.
L’Enfant et les sortilèges (“The Child and the Spells”), with music by Maurice Ravel and libretto by Colette, tells the story of a bad child that has a bad day when everything around him comes alive to teach him a lesson about respect and responsibility. Rusalka (“The Water Nymph”), with music by Antonín Dvorák and libretto by Jaroslav Kvapil, narrates the original version of the Little Mermaid fairytale, albeit one that doesn’t quite end happily-ever-after. Both selections will be sung in their original languages of French and Czech with piano accompaniment in a semi-produced format.

LAEP Speaker Series: Todd Mead, What is this Beautiful Place?

Speaker Bio Originally from Wisconsin, Todd has lived and worked in Colorado and California for over forty years. Early life in a small town on the Wolf River introduced him to the experience of nature as a playground, as an escape, and as series of evolving places. Spurred by observations of human caused environmental degradation, Todd found landscape architecture as means of melding ecological reparation with art, while studying geology and native plant community restoration in the midwest. Drawn to wilder environments, Todd moved west immediately after undergraduate school, eventually joining Civitas and remaining there for more than twenty years. Emerging opportunities for change lead him to join Peter Walker Partners (PWP) in Berkeley, and later the Office of Cheryl Barton (O|CB) in San Francisco. Now with SCAPE in their San Francisco office, he applies decades of experience in a collaborative team-focused approach, blending critical design thinking with problem-solving and mentoring. His project experience varies in scale, complexity, and budget—including urban parks and gardens; educational, medical, and corporate campuses; waterfronts; and urban infill redevelopments.

Our Spring 2025 theme is "Celebrate Undergrad Research" in recognition of USU's 2025 "Year of Undergraduate Research."
April 11 Speakers: Mathematicians Matt Young, faculty member in USU’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and undergraduate researcher Seth Porter, conduct research to define and compute algebraic invariants of knots in a three-dimensional vector space. A knot is an embedding of a circle into a three-dimensional space. A knot invariant is a quantity assigned to a knot that remains the same for any other knot that is topologically equivalent to it. Matt and Seth will “untangle” this concept, while explaining the benefits of getting involved in undergraduate research.

On April 11 our students have assembled a range of contemporary musical theatre scenes and selections into a “Sondheim, etc.” cabaret featuring them as not only the performers but also as directors and choreographers! The cabaret will be an enjoyable evening of musical theatre favorites from Sondheim’s various works, "Shrek," "West Side Story," "Hairspray," "Thoroughly Modern Millie," "Newsies," and more!
USU Wildland Fire Club - S130 - Firefighter Training Field Exercise

Museum and Music: Raven Chacon Drum Grid

Raven Chacon (Diné) is a composer, performer, and installation artist born at Fort Defiance, Navajo Nation. In 2022, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Music for his composition Voiceless Mass, and in 2023 was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship. He has exhibited, performed, or had works performed at LACMA, The Whitney Biennial, Borealis Festival, SITE Santa Fe, The Kennedy Center, and more. As an educator, Chacon is the senior composer mentor for the Native American Composer Apprentice Project (NACAP). For Drum Grid, Raven Chacon uses a local neighborhood to orchestrate a call-and-response composition for numerous drummers, each positioned on a street corner or city system. Over time, new rhythms and patterns emerge as the surrounding cityscape creates echoes and polyphony. For Chacon, in performing Drum Grid, a community has the agency to change the landscape of their neighborhood, activating potential questions and new generative urgencies.

Cache Symphony Orchestra

The Cache Symphony Orchestra was founded over 35 years ago to bring together community members in the Cache Valley region to create music, connect with fellow musicians, and provide the community with another source of fine classical music.
Comprised entirely of dedicated volunteer musicians, the orchestra began with just a handful of members and has since grown into a grand symphony of over 90 performers. Each season, the orchestra presents two concerts—one in winter and one in spring—on the Utah State University campus.

The USU Percussion Ensembles concert is a unique and fun addition to the lineup of concerts presented by the Caine College of the Arts. Each semester, we play a wide-array of literature from contemporary percussion ensemble to pieces for world percussion. This semester’s concert will feature works from composers Adam Silverman, David Gillingham, Blake Tyson, Amadeo Roldan, Dave Hall, Daniel Levitan, and Michael Burritt.

Seniors in the Art + Design Bachelor of Fine Arts program at Utah State University will present their works during a capstone exhibition. The show includes drawing & painting, photography, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and art education. The work in the exhibition represents a culmination of refined skills, ideas, and perspectives that took students several years to develop and master.
This exhibition is free and open to the public and runs April 7–16 in the Tippetts & Eccles Galleries, located in the Chase Fine Arts Center, open Monday–Friday from 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

The Spring Choral Concert will feature the USU Chamber Singers, Chorale and Sapphire Singers performing a variety of great choral music in the lush acoustics of the Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall, highlighting two of composer Eric Whitacre's most beloved works, CLOUDBURST and LEONARDO DREAMS OF HIS FLYING MACHINE. High School Band Festival

The USU Bands host three events each Spring for school-age ensembles: Junior High/Middle School Festival, Junior High/Middle School Clinic, and the High School Festival. These events annually host over 30 school bands from Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming, totaling over 1500 students that come to the USU campus. This day-long event includes professional adjudication of each band's performance, a recording of the performance, and a live rehearsal clinic with the USU Director of Bands, band faculty and/or guest clinicians from around the country. Additionally, bands are invited to an open rehearsal of the USU Wind Orchestra and a live performance of the Orchestra.

Moyle Q. Rice Lecture Series on Writing

Moyle Q. Rice was a professor of English here at USU for 45 years, retiring in 1982. He was beloved by students and faculty, many of whom have donated to support this lecture series and celebrate the memory of his teaching and dedication to students. Among other courses, Professor Rice taught composition, and so the Moyle Q. Rice Lecture Series celebrates the importance of writing in society. It is highly fitting that for our first speaker we welcome back Dr. Rachel Bryson, a graduate of our PhD program in Technical Communication and Rhetoric—and a dedicated teacher of composition. Dr. Bryson’s talk, “Why We Write: Collaboration, Community, and Transformation,” will be held on Friday, April 18 from 1:30-2:30 in the Mehdi Heravi Center, room 201 (the Carolyn Tanner Irish Pavilion) and on Zoom. About the Lecture When every turn of the channel, the page, or swipe of the screen shrieks about the breadth and depth of the housing crisis, it can be easy to insist that the solution simply lies in building more. Build it anywhere, at all cost. History tells us this cannot and does not work. As builders, developers, designers, and planners we have the power to make better decisions. And we all know with great power comes great responsibility (thanks, Spiderman). We’ll explore multiple case studies for how to make choices about the right places, right types of homes, and right creative programs to bring lasting housing solutions to bear in all types of communities.

USU Bass Festival Closing Concert

The USU Bass Festival is an annual event that provides bassists a chance to work with performers and educators from around the world and is open to bassists of any age and experience level. Festival activities include masterclasses, technique workshops, guest artist performances, and the opportunity to perform in a bass choir. Pre-registration is required to participate in the all-day event.
This year’s festival will feature bassist Jacob Warren (https://www.jacobvwarren.com/). More information and the registration form can be found at music.usu.edu/bassfest. The closing concert is free and open to all and will feature the USU Bass Ensemble, the festival bass choir, and guest artist Jacob Warren.

AFCO celebrates one of the most prolific and popular composers of choral music in the world today, Sir John Rutter, who was recently Knighted by King Charles III for services to music. Rutter’s music has touched millions of listeners around the globe and is sure to leave audiences deeply moved as we perform some of his most popular and beloved works, including his touching Mass for the Children, featuring the Cache Children’s Choir.

Join the Logan Canyon Winds for a unique and dynamic program showcasing a blend of classic and unexpected chamber repertoire.
The centerpiece of the evening features Beethoven’s Quintet for Piano and Winds, a lively and elegant work that highlights the rich interplay between instruments. The program also includes Carl Nielsen’s Serenata in vano, a whimsical quintet for clarinet, bassoon, horn, cello, and bass. As Nielsen himself described, the piece playfully portrays a group of musicians attempting (and failing) to serenade a lady, ultimately shrugging off their efforts and marching home with a tune of their own amusement.
With a mix of humor, virtuosity, and uncommon instrumental combinations, this concert offers a rare departure from the ensemble’s usual repertoire. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear a special performance by the Logan Canyon Winds and their faculty guests.
